CMS Issues Guidance for MA-Hospice Demonstration Model

Situation Report | November 2, 2020

The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has recently issued guidance on the Value-Based Insurance Design Model (VBID) Hospice Benefit Component. It includes supplemental technical guidance for the participating Medicare Advantage Organizations (MAOs) as well as hospice providers that will serve patients enrolled in participating MAOs.

The VBID Hospice Benefit Component is scheduled to launch on January 1, 2021. It will operate in 206 counties located in 14 states and territories. HCA member Visiting Nurse Service of New York (VNSNY) is among organizations selected to participate.

Through the model, CMS intends to test the impact on payment and service delivery of incorporating the Medicare Part A hospice benefit in the Medicare Advantage (MA) program.
