The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is extending the deadline for home health agencies (HHAs) to use the revised Advance Beneficiary Notice of Noncoverage (ABN). The extension, which was made due to COVID-19 concerns, is from August 31, 2020 to January 1, 2021.
HHAs may use the updated ABN prior to January 1, 2021. The ABN form and instructions may be found here.
The ABN is issued by HHAs and other providers to Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries in situations where Medicare payment is expected to be denied. The purpose is to transfer potential financial liability to the Medicare beneficiary in certain instances.
