Influenza Recommendations Issued

Situation Report | August 24, 2020

On August 20, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued recommendations for influenza vaccinations during the 2020-21 season.

These were also outlined in a CDC webinar on “2020-2021 Influenza Vaccination Recommendations and Clinical Guidance during the COVID-19 Pandemic” last week. The slides are here and the program recording will be posted here.

The recommendations and program include some information on the impact of COVID-19 on influenza vaccinations, including:

  • Clinicians can consider delaying vaccination for those who have acute illness with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 until patients are no longer acutely ill.
  • Patients whose influenza vaccination is delayed should be reminded to return for vaccination once recovered from COVID-19.

HCA will keep members informed as more guidance on this and related topics are released.
