September is Sepsis Awareness Month

Situation Report | September 7, 2021

HCA urges all members to participate in Sepsis Awareness Month, a national drive in all 50 states spearheaded by Sepsis Alliance. Download the Sepsis Alliance Toolkit to learn more.

Sepsis resources can also be found on the Sepsis Alliance website, ENDSepsis –The Rory Staunton Legacy and HCA’s Stop Sepsis at Home NY initiative.

HCA has already initiated a host of activities leading off Sepsis Awareness Month:

  • HCA has shared programming opportunities and announcements for special sessions throughout September, including the 2021 Sepsis Alliance Summit on September 14 to 16.
  • HCA also worked with Sepsis Alliance and the state Legislature to advance a resolution memorializing September 2021 as Sepsis Awareness Month
  • Aided with a new 2021 grant written by HCA and awarded by the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation, HCA is amid a major new phase in our efforts to fight sepsis in the home care setting through our Pediatric Sepsis Screening Tool workgroup, formed to develop the first of its kind tools for system-wide use in pediatric home care, and through an expanded series of initiatives designed to improve sepsis coordination and response across the continuum of care.

Community care providers and managed long term care plans who have not yet adopted the HCA sepsis screening and intervention tool as part of their clinical practice should complete the inquiry form here to learn more and initiate the process.

Sepsis is among the top conditions that lead to home care referral. It is the number-one cause of Medicare hospital readmissions and avoidable Medicaid hospitalizations. It also causes a death every two minutes in the U.S.
