Cultural Competency: Improving Health Outcomes, Staff Retention, & Fostering a Healthy Work Environment

Situation Report | August 8, 2022

Home care reaches a variety of individuals across the age and disability spectrum, including both providers and receivers of care. Diverse and inclusive workplaces are more innovative, efficient, productive, and successful. Diverse cultures have unique histories and experiences, and celebrating these differences helps to foster a collaborative work environment, directly benefiting employees, employers, consumers, productivity, and health outcomes.

The quality of the patient-provider interaction is a significant factor in determining health outcomes and overall quality of life. Healthcare providers will see patients from many backgrounds with differing beliefs and preferences. There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach, and assumptions cannot be made for what is best for others. Providers who demonstrate cultural competence and humility during their interactions with patients create space for them to communicate their unique needs and allow you to meet them properly.

The Home Care Association Education & Research (HCA E&R) in partnership with the Iroquois Healthcare Association (IHA) are delivering web-based Diversity, Inclusion and Health Equity Training for all levels of staff. This training is focused on addressing societal issues that will engage employees by helping them understand, recognize, and advocate for a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture.

This complimentary training is open to all home care and hospice personnel in New York State. The cultural competency course series explores assumptions about patients from diverse cultures, providing guidelines and best practices for improving the quality of patient-provider interactions, discusses the component of a cross-cultural patient assessment, and provides communication models and tips.
