Medication Safety: Knowledge is Power

This presentation will equip the nurse at all levels of education and training on the clinical pearls of medication safety:

  • Review how a drug comes to market through rigorous clinical trials with a focus on patient safety and approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
  • Describe the differences between FDA approved medications vs. compounded medications
  • Explore the influence of drug metabolism by the body’s P450 enzyme system
  • Discuss where to find and implement the best evidence when reviewing medication use and implications
  • Demonstrate the FDA’s use of the Black Box Warning and what that means on safe nursing practice
  • Identify medication classes that carry a high-risk for adverse reactions.

Dr. Kim Kuebler, founder and director of the Multiple Chronic Conditions Resource Center, is a national/international thought leader in chronic conditions, pain, and palliative care. She received her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Vanderbilt University. She is a Mayday Pain Fellow from the Department of Neurology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. She is an award-winning author of eight textbooks on chronic disease, symptoms, and palliative care. She has conducted and published several research projects.
