Sepsis Awareness Month- Legislative Resolution & Educational Events

The Situation Report | September 5, 2023

The New York state Senate, at the request of HCA, has passed a legislative resolution memorializing Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim September 2023 as Sepsis Awareness Month in New York State.

HCA applauds Governor Kathy Hochul and Senate Health Chairman Senator Gustavo Rivera for proclaiming September 2023 as Sepsis Awareness Month. Awareness is the first step to preventing avoidable sepsis deaths.

Sepsis, affecting 1.7 million people per year, is the body’s inflammatory response to infection that can cause tissue damage, organ failure, and death. Older adults or people with weakened immune systems are most at risk for developing sepsis, but anyone can develop sepsis from an infection.

Home care plays a vital role in identifying and addressing sepsis, as 87% of sepsis originates in the home and community-based settings. For every hour that treatment is delayed, the chance of mortality increases by 4-9%. Early identification and treatment are imperative for decreasing sepsis mortality.

HCA, in partnership with IPRO, END SEPSIS The Legacy of Rory Staunton, Sepsis Alliance, and Leadership in Medicine students developed, tested, and implemented the Home Care Sepsis Screening Tools just for this purpose. Check out HCA’s Stop Sepsis at Home page for more information about HCA’s Home Care Sepsis Screening and Intervention Tools.

Commemorate Sepsis Awareness Month by onboarding the Sepsis Screening and Intervention Tools and Protocols for adults and pediatrics, in your agency ASAP! Plans and providers who are interested in onboarding the tools should email sepsistool@hcanys.org.
